It started in April 2012 as a joint venture by Rowling and Sony. In 2016, Pottermore was remade and relaunched in the style of a blog. Focusing mainly on new writing from Rowling, news and special feature articles, it allows the user to make a more private profile where they are sorted in both their Hogwarts and Ilvermorny house. Since it began, Pottermore has posted some of Rowling’s extensive collection of work with over 18,000 words.

From 31 July and 6 August 2011, Pottermore held the Magical Quill Challenge. For seven days, fans had to try and to solve a new clue every day on the main site and then type it on the end of another URL. They then had to find the correct quill on the page which would give them early access to Pottermore. On 8 August, everyone who were already given early access were unable to login to Pottermore.
